PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Gaining a better understanding of the Morristown Toastmasters program begins with understanding our mission. The mission of our Toastmasters club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth. Your growth and development is what Toastmasters is all about.

How the Toastmasters Program Works
At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice:

Conducting Meetings. Meetings usually begin with a short business session which helps members learn basic meeting procedures.
Giving Impromptu Speeches. Selected members present two-minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics.
Presenting Prepared Speeches. Three or more members present speeches based on projects from the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Program manuals. Projects cover such topics as voice, gestures, speech organization, and persuasion.
Offering Constructive Evaluations. Every prepared speaker is assigned an experienced toastmaster who points out speech strengths and offers suggestions for improvement.

Professional Resources and Materials
Each member receives a variety of manuals and resources on speaking supplied by Toastmasters International. Members also have access to other books, audio and video cassettes as well as compact disks and DVDs. In addition, members receive our award-winning monthly magazine The Toastmaster which offers further insights on speaking and leadership techniques.

Practice Makes Improvement
Public speaking and leadership skills cannot be learned in a few days. They require practice. Members build communications skills by preparing and presenting speeches using manuals supplied by Toastmasters International. Leadership skills are strengthened by organizing and conducting meetings as well as motivating others to help. Club leadership roles and a formal leadership development program offer other opportunities to learn and grow. Just as Toastmasters learn to speak by speaking, they learn to lead by leading.
